Stephaine Michaels

Embracing her calling

Puerto Rican and Jamaican descent, Stephaine Michaels weaves her multicultural background into her talents as an entertainer. Her scope covers vintage rhythm and blues, classic rock, contemporary pop, rap and hip-hop.

Born on November 25 in the Bronx in New York, Michaels was raised there by her mother and stepfather. Her stepfather cultivated her love for music. As a musician, he exposed her to a wide variety of instruments, sounds and rhythms. At age 18, Michaels moved to Florida to be closer to her mother after the passing of her grandfather.

Michaels discovered a true love for entertaining at the early age of four years old when she began to sing and dance. By age six, she was sharing her talents with kids in her neighborhood. Throughout her childhood and into her early teenage years, not only did she display her abilities, she would teach her peers the songs and dance moves she had learned from watching music videos. Inspired, she would mimic the choreography and even began to write music.

At age nine, Michaels performed at Congressman Del Mastro’s Inauguration ball in New York City before fellow congressmen, actors, and news anchors including: Gay Pressman, Connie Chung and Woody Allen.

After her move to Miami, she began to perform at open mic events throughout South Florida. As a result of those opportunities, she started to develop a name for herself. Michaels joined a group called “Drastic Measures” and they instantly created a buzz within the hip-hop scene. Her ability to sing and rap captured the attention of some of Miami’s most notable record labels, including Slip-N-Slide Records. A manager from the label gained interest in her, as a solo artist only, but she turned down the opportunity as a result of her commitment to the group.

It has been quiet a journey to say the least in regards to what has brought Steph to where she is today. Having always been a singer and performer in some way, she got my start in the South Florida band circuit courtesy of a posting on Craigslist for a female lead vocalist. Before that she was a full time aspiring actress, and doing part-time work for hire for some of South Florida’s top music producers.

As more opportunities presented themselves, another aspect of life required more of her attention. Michaels learned that she would soon be a mother. Despite the challenge of motherhood, she was able to embrace this new chapter of her life while continuing to develop her musical talent. This bright new star in her life became an inspiration and motivation to increase her efforts to grow as an entertainer.

Often Michaels felt out-of-place and lost, turning to music as her therapist and writing as her coach. This allowed her to channel certain emotions and escape the daily struggles of life. The sum of those experiences helped her take ownership of her identity. Now a mother, failure was not an option. However, maintaining morals and values had now become a priority for Michaels. Spirituality and God became another driving force in her efforts and began guiding her path.

This ethical entertainer was ignited by the new flame that gave fuel to her musical career. Michaels began to record with some of Miami’s top producers including Cool & Dre and Scrappy. This led to singing backup vocals for such artists as The Game, Ne-Yo, Queen Latifah, Willy North Pole (from DTP) and Wale. She also sang musical scores for Cirque Du Soleil.

transition from music to TV and film

Embracing her calling as an entertainer, Michaels began a transition from music to television and film. Her first acting gig was in the 2006 hit film, Miami Vice staring Jaime Foxx and Colin Farrell. As a result of that, her appetite for film developed. Michaels started taking acting classes and shot a Dove Beauty Campaign in 2007, along with a variety of different commercials and independent films.

As exciting as the TV and film experience was, her passion remained in music. At that point, she joined The Fusion Band and began to perform at various places throughout South Florida. Performances at The Fling Lounge at the Isles Casino, Mardi Gras Casino, The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Seminole Classic Casino and Gulfstream Casino increased the entertainer's loyal fan base. As her skills developed, Michaels was searching for the next phase in her singing career.

After working with the band for three and a half years, Steph was offered an opportunity that she couldn’t resist. Currently Steph and her band The B.B King All Stars are performing weekly at B.B Kings Blues Club at City Place in West Palm beach. You can catch her live on stage with the guys Thursday thru Saturdays. The band also plays on Sunday. "Just being able to perform in front of an audience and actually be able to support myself doing so has been amazing. So many musicians jam out and don’t get paid for it. They say “If you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life” I say “I guess that makes me unemployed!”

When she’s not on stage, Steph is working diligently on her debut solo project. "I don’t have much of a specific process for songwriting per say, It all depends on the music. I become inspired by the rhythms and when they talk to me, I write what it says. I'm not really feeling much of what I am hearing on the radio, I feel like the record companies are putting out a lot of crap. I listen to a lot of older records which in my opinion was when music was still great, and you can expect a lot of versatility in my upcoming records. Im touching on gospel, R&b, soul and some hip hop. " No one knows what the future holds, but one thing for sure is that this lady is definitely not setting any limitations or boundries on herself and It is certainly clear that music, TV & film is definitely very visible on the horizon.

Michaels is a career-minded, soulful talent who connects with her fans, as if they were old friends, with an honest smile. Gaining strength from her challenges, Michaels believes, “limitations only exist in the minds of those that refuse to overcome them.” She believes in herself, her abilities and her God. As her fresh tattoo reads...Destined for Greatness.
