A long time coming... Still rockin strong as
ever
Gilby Clarke’s
rock n’ roll
journey actually began in Redondo Beach, California. He
and his family moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Redondo in
the early 1980s and Clarke attended school there for
one year. He
has made five solo records played with Heart, Nancy
Sinatra, the MC5, Supernova and
Guns N' Roses just to name
a few. His career aspirations and
life path was actually launched when he was 12-years-old
and first laid his eyes on the greatest rock guitarist
of all time.
“When
I was a kid I saw a poster of Jimi Hendrix,
and it was the Monterey Pop poster where he
is playing his white Stratocaster in his blue
outfit,” Clarke
recalled. “And I thought he was the coolest
looking human being I’d ever seen. ‘I
don’t know what that guy is, but I want
to be that guy – only without the afro.’”Gilby
is a true fan of rock n’ roll,
and was most influenced by the Beatles, Rolling
Stones & David
Bowie. His guitar playing favorites are Jimmy
Page, Mick Ronson & Rick Derringer.
He scored some modest success upon
arriving in Hollywood; playing guitar and singing
with a band called Candy and then formed his own
band, Kill for Thrills. After the somewhat fluffier
sounds of the 1980s began to subside, harder rock
was once again finding its way to the fore; Clarke’s
band was a forerunner. Kill for Thrills would lay
down a sound that Clarke would continue to build
upon for the next two decades.
Appetite for Destruction
In late 80s, Guns N’ Roses
blew up on the strength of their album Appetite
for Destruction, which eventually sold 28 million
copies and almost single-handedly brought harder
rock back into vogue. And so it seemed a natural
fit a few years later, after guitarist Izzy Stradlin
abruptly quit that the band asked Clarke to join
the massive Use Your Illusion tour. He had
always known he was a rock n’ roll lifer. But
almost overnight he went from being in relative obscurity
to rock star in one swoop.
Guns N' Roses is among 15 finalists
for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Votes will be cast by a group of more than 500 musicians
and industry professionals; of the 15 nominees, the
five that get the most votes will be announced in
January and inducted into the Hall Of Fame at its
27th annual ceremony on April 14, 2012 in Cleveland,
Ohio, home to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And
Museum. Guns N' Roses was nominated in its first
year of eligibility. "It's a great honor," Clarke
stated "The band deserves it. It was a long time
coming." . |

The
New CD
"I
have been finally working on a new CD. It has been
a long time and I didn't even realize how long it
has been. It's almost been ten years since I put
out a record. I just started writing some new material
at the begriming of this year that I am actually
happy with. I have six tracks recorded now, so as
soon as I get ten good songs, it's time to put out
a record." In
addition to
working on a new solo record Gilby has just returned
from touring Sweden and is always busy
producing bands at his own Redrum Recording studio.
Hopefully he will get the record out early next
year and have some new dates announced to support
it soon to follow.
When writing songs for a record, he usually starts
with a riff or a lyric idea. If it’s riff based
tune, what he does is jams with a bass player and
drummer till it feels good. If it’s
a lyric idea, then he usually will try and find
a riff for it.
One of the things that may surprise you about Gilby
is that in addition to being an avid motorcycle rider
he also builds
his own choppers in his spare time, having re-built
two vintage motorcycles. A '1947 Knucklehead' and
a '1965 Panhead'. When he was a kid he even wanted
to join the Hell's Angels for a time. He is also
a fan of The Black Keys, likes The Hives and goes
on record saying "I’d love to be able
to jam with John Bonham and Paul
McCartney one day."
Touring with GNR was a truly great experience. "They
were on top of the world and it was a fun ride.
All the shows sold out and the band was slamming.
It was fun musically and emotionally as well. Nothing
beats being in a band making records and touring
the world." |

As
with all performers he loves the connection he
gets with an audience when they get it. However, "Dealing
with the assholes that want something they don’t
deserve can be tiresome. When things are going well,
everybody comes out of the woodwork and then says
you owe them something. I spent a lot of money on
lawyers just to play guitar in a rock n roll band."
Gilby would like to see more support for what musicians
and the true artists that help the pop stars succeed
get. As he sees it, "The real musicians aren’t
making shit compared to what the agents, managers,
lawyers, etc… make.
Today with the Internet , The positive is you can
get directly to your audience. But the negative
is, trying to locate your audience with all the
riff raff in the way."
All in all he sums it up
by saying "I don’t
know, everything changes so fast, it’s hard
to predict, but all you can do is respect everybody
around you and treat
them right.." He would like to for you to
just remember the songs, shows and smile. Gilby
certainly has made many smile over the way and
rocked audiences all over the globe. Keep it coming
Gilby, we can't wait to see what you do next, no
doubt it will be something cool and will make us smile.

To this day Gilby continues to write, produce and perform.
Churning out his own brand of gut-bucket rock ’n’ roll
songs with fat choruses. Now, he’s back on his
own, doing his thing and he continues to produce a
string of really cool , varied bands and music. See www.gilbyclarke.com for
more on Gilby.
