Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll - And Fitness?
By Chris Rockett

There is no denying that the music industry spells glitz and glamour....but it goes hand and hand with stress: mental, emotional and most of all, physical. Thus, as you try your very best to achieve your full potential as a performing artist, you must not allow your health to take a back seat. Cliche as it may sound, but the saying "Health is wealth" remains true even for rockstars.

This post is inspired by "5 Keys To Fitness For Musicians", an excellent article by Johnny Ryan posted on Head Above Music. You should definitely read that as well, thanks for the info guys.

Heed these 5 key points below to help you stay fit and well even if you stayed up the whole night drinking vodka through your eye balls:

WATER IS THE ESSENCE OF LIFE
Stage performances can be like a WAR! But do you know that by drinking water you can actually revitalize yourself from a tiring night? At the same time, water can keep the body and brain active if taken in a considerable amount before a performance as well. In fact, members of the Foo Fighters gulp at least 12 ounces of electrolyte water to make sure that their bodies are properly hydrated before engaging in their fights.

Be like Dave Grohl and guzzel that Sheeat!

TAKING A REST IS NOT A CRIME
In school, we were taught that our body needs at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night. Without sleep (or without enough of it), the body can't perform well. As you get used to sleeping less than what your body needs, the more your brain will deceive you into the thinking that you don't really need to take a rest. Once you start to loose sleep every night, your energy level on stage will suffer. Not only that, you'll will feel weak and high-strung. The quality of your voice will be affected too!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Nutrition is the key word here. If you eat the right and proper food before and after your performance, you'll be able to avert possible health issues that can deter you as a performer.

Most people who engage in highly stressful physical activities actually make use of the Zone-like diet scheme. What is it, you ask? It's a 40:40:30 proportion of carbs, protein and fats.

To be more specific, low-glycemic index carbohydrates in the likes of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains should make up 40% of your diet. The other 40% should be composed of lean proteins such as chicken, turkey, fish, soy, lean beef or low fat dairy products. On the other hand the remaining 30% should be composed of healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado, flax, fish oil, nuts and seeds.

This diet can help you balance your insulin, which is responsible for weight gain and aggravated gastronomic pangs. Jessica Simpson and Sting are just 2 well-known personalities who utilize this diet.

But I'm probably the worst person on earth to give you health advice so speak to somebody who knows what their talking about before you try any new diet.

FLEX THOSE MUSCLES
Do you know that weight-lifting doesn't only develop those bulges that give you shape? By lifting weights, you actually boost your stamina and strength which is vital especially when you perform on stage. Just make sure you do the proper stretching before starting those weights. If not, you might end up injuring yourself or straining your muscles.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL
Other than weight lifting, you also have to do some cardiovascular exercises. There is a wide variety that you can choose from: aerobics, taebo, stationary biking, jump rope, belly dancing, hip hop abs....and the list goes on. While weight-lifting develops your muscles and strength, cardiovascular exercises enable you to lose weight and develop your endurance. This is especially helpful when you sing and jump around like a total nutcase!

It's pretty obvious that there's more to what I've mentioned. But at least now you know the basics.
